District 5230 Conference (April 27-29, 2007)

What Happens in Visalia
Stays in Visalia!
by District Governor Don Kremer

Let me say first that the “Vegas Nights” District Conference was a great success and I thank all who attended and helped celebrate a wonderful year. Those who did not attend missed a great weekend of Fellowship and Information. A big Thank You to Conference Chair Bob Eurich and his hard working Conference Committee for making this one of the best District 5230 conferences ever. The June issue of “Today” will have extensive coverage of the conference, but these are some highlights.

Approximately 70 people attended the Rotary Academy on Friday morning making it the best attended Academy session ever. I’m happy to say that we received many positive comments regarding the session. Elvis was in the house Friday afternoon and Major Brian Shul left everyone speechless with his videos, photos and stories of his experiences flying the SR-71 Blackbird Spy Plane. Fun was had by all during the lounge entertainment and the Vegas Casino night on Friday night.

On Saturday, Dr. Joe Serra left listeners in tears with his presentation on Polio “crawlers.” He explained that the orthopedic surgery begins with young people who have never been on their feet, much less walked, and seven to nine weeks later they are standing and walking with crutches. The happy faces say it all. There was a tribute to Dr. Sabino (Benny) Santos who planted the seed of Polio Eradication in 1979 when he requested the very first 3H Grant to immunize over 6 million Filipino children against Polio. RI President’s Representative, Dr. John Sever, who made the proposal that “Rotary should eradicate all vaccine preventable diseases from the earth”, gave us an update on the ongoing war against Polio. The final stages of the battle are difficult, but all concerned believe total eradication will happen within the next 24 months.

There were seven Plenary Sessions over two days covering the four Avenues of Service, The Rotary Foundation, Membership and the 4-Way-Test. Allen Mathis, grandson of PRIP Herbert Taylor and author of the 4-Way-Test, challenged us to live by the test with a rousing presentation. Sara Lynn, winner of the District’s 4-Way-Test-Essay contest read her essay to an appreciative audience.

The District 5230 Club Awards Ceremony is always the highlight of the celebration of success at any District Conference. All of our clubs are dedicated to serving their communities near and far and each is committed to growing and becoming stronger. Club Awards are given in recognition of the most effective projects, programs and leadership and they come in three flavors.

First, are the awards for submitted applications. Awards Committee Chair Mark Perry, Visalia Breakfast, organized an electronic awards system in which 27 District Leaders served as judges. Application forms were downloaded from the IRC, completed, and then uploaded by the individual clubs to the Awards Committee. Judges were assigned applications on a random basis and evaluated them using an objective set of voting criteria. The voting was tallied electronically, monitored by Mark and then forwarded to me for final review. I didn’t change a thing. The system worked flawlessly and I give great thanks to Mark and the core group who designed and implemented the system.

The second type of award is determined by a clubs performance in terms of numbers. The Rotary Foundation Giving and Membership Growth are examples of the second set of awards.

The third type of award is given by the District Governor to recognize the top performing clubs in the district.

Congratulations to all the recognized clubs. The following is a list of award categories and the winning clubs.
